Fake Leopard 设计比赛

Mac OS X Leopard 或者说版本 10.5 正在吊起大家越来越高的胃口，有受不了的粉丝只有想办法来这一招缓解一下自己的饥渴，比如 Phill Ryu 发起的 Fake Leopard Screenshot Contest。

前天，比赛终于出了结果。这场用户对 OS X 畅想的盛宴果然丰富。

First Place: Eric Patterson

他的设计包括 重新设计的 Finder，以及 iChat 和 Mail 的集成。Andy Kim 说 Apple should hire this guy 呵呵

Second Place: Emmett Stackelberg

Emmet 的新玩意儿没有 Eric 的多，不过比较突破：触摸屏支持。另外就是可视化的 Safari tab 支持－－计划中的 IE7 和 Maxthon 新版本也将具备的新特性；再就是 iTunes podcast 下载和 Safari 的 Bittorrent 支持－－虽然几乎所有评委都认为 Apple 不会真的这么干。

Third Place: Adam Shutsa

增强的带 Tab 的 Finder，他还带来了自己的“iMeeting” －－这可是让他进入三甲的关键。

Runner Up: Nathan Ziarek

Nathan 期望的是扩展的元数据特性。像 AddressBook 这样的程序能关联更多的东西；此外他的设想还包括一些小的增强功能，UI 设计，Delicious Library 风格的 Front Row 更新，甚至还有具有物理纸张特性的窗口行为。

Runner Up: Reuben Henriques

Reuben 的设计解决了很多当前 OS X 的不足，体现了那些被强烈要求加入的功能。他也提到了改进的元数据支持。Dashboard 层之外的 widgets，Windows 虚拟，在 iChat 之内的类似“iMeeting”的应用，iTunes 支持专辑封面浏览。

Runner Up: Stephen Sciliano

Stephen 只靠着一张设计就入围，这是他对 Aperture 的期望。这是唯一一个靠对 Apple 专业软件的 fake 设计入围的作品。

WWDC 开幕在即，所以的设计终归要走到仍然没影儿的失望和已然实现的惊喜中，5:5 开的几率谁都说不准，唯一能确定的是，创新，是赢得客户的最好方法。

你有没有我这么眼尖，看到 Ethan Hunt 在梵蒂冈的小物件？OQO；你有没有我这么多疑，想起去年有天晚上下班的时候看到直升机在中银的楼上盘旋，认为那时候应该就是在拍 MI III？

OpenDarwin 即将关闭

期望开发另一个 Darwin OS derivative 的努力就这么停止了。4年来，OpenDarwin 没能达到自己的目标，现在的 OpenDarwin 只是host OS X 相关项目的地方。

OpenDarwin was originally created with the goal of providing a development environment for building and developing Mac OS X sources as well as developing a standalone Darwin OS derivative. OpenDarwin was meant to be a development community and a proving ground for fixes and features for Mac OS X and Darwin, which could be picked up by Apple for inclusion in the canonical sources. OpenDarwin has failed to achieve its goals in 4 years of operation, and moves further from achieving these goals as time goes on. For this reason, OpenDarwin will be shutting down.

Over the past few years, OpenDarwin has become a mere hosting facility for Mac OS X related projects. The original notions of developing the Mac OS X and Darwin sources has not panned out. Availability of sources, interaction with Apple representatives, difficulty building and tracking sources, and a lack of interest from the community have all contributed to this. Administering a system to host other people’s projects is not what the remaining OpenDarwin contributors had signed up for and have been doing this thankless task far longer than they expected. It is time for OpenDarwin to go dark.

Project admins for all active projects have been notified, and we will be working with them to provide as seamless a transition to their new homes as possible. We don’t want to boot anyone off, we will be operating the machines as usual for several months, until everyone has had a chance to move elsewhere.

We will continue to provide email and dns redirection after the machines go dark. We’ll be looking at what other redirection services are needed and can be provided after hosting has ceased.

The OpenDarwin team would like to thank everyone who did contribute to the project, and our apologies to active, loyal projects that have to move.

Core 2 多

我看到网上的风潮是，很多人会对 Google 还没推出什么服务或者落后地推出了什么服务而痛心疾首，我年纪大了，已经不这样情绪化了，所以目前主要会因为 Alienware 还没推出 Core 2 Duo 的机器或者落后地推出了 Core 2 Duo 的机器而痛心疾首。

Area-51 ALX 可以免除我不可名状的痛苦。

标价 5999，成为 Alienware 最贵的桌面机型，配置是 Core 2 Duo 家族中顶级的 Core 2 Extreme 2.93GHz, 1066MHz FSB 版本。最高 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 800，目前看来，4G 大小是唯一玷污 Alienware 最酷身份的配置，让人有 MacBook 上开始标配 Windows 的感觉。你上周可能刚在硬件网站或者杂志上看到介绍的 Quad SLI 也已经填入了 Area-51 的肚子，不知道是不是因为 ATI 忙着把自己卖个好价钱疏忽了这一块儿，这次仍然是当仁不让的 NVIDIA，即便在 2560×1600 的分辨率下玩游戏也一样畅快，另外就是同样称得上“传说”的 PhysX Physics Processing Unit；如果选配标准的 SLI，配置是2 x 512MB Nvidia GeForce 7900 GTX ，如果是 Quad SLI，那就是 2 x 1GB Nvidia GeForce 7950 GX2L 。在最没有创意空间的硬盘配置中，可以选择 RAID 0 或 1，硬盘从 7200 到 10000 转，可以选择单个 250G 到 750G 的磁盘，最多可挂 4 块。虽然发烧，不过还是没有蓝光或者 HDDVD 配置，只是一般的 DVD 刻录机，外有 28合1 的读/写卡器。
另外 Alienware 这次也趁东风更新了机箱，新型号是 Alienware P2，还是一贯的外星人头像风格，不过金属感和科技感更强。

标配 OS 是 XP Pro 或者 Media Center Edition 2005，搞笑的是这样的配置，却只有个 Windows® Vista Capable，我只有两个解释，一是 Alienware 虽然傍了大款，可还是懒得交认证费用所以如此胡乱打发，二就是，恐怕这个配置太高，Vista 飞快得跑出 bug ……所以，不够 Premium Ready 。

有意思的是，在 Features 的页旁，摆着一个 Chassis Comparison，下面字样为“Competitor’s Newest Entry”，眼熟的人一下就能看出来，这就是 Dell 新的也配置了 Core 2 Duo 的 XPS 700 嘛。

除了 Area-51 ALX，还有稍低配置的 Area-51® 7500，和 Area-51® 5500，

桌面机型虽然有了，Core 2 Duo 的笔记本型号还是没影儿，看来我的心脏还是很难安生。配置 Centrino Duo 的 Area-51 和 Sentia 什么的在减价 100 或 200 美元销售，不知道是不是个新产品要出来的信号。

ALX 虽然买不起，不过我还是可以很熟练地安慰自己道，就算买不起，他的键盘鼠标配置的也不过和我一样嘛……

Core 2 Duo 发布

今天 Intel Core 2 Duo family 正式发布。虽然之前的 Woodcrest 其实同门，不过因为与普通消费者直接关系不大，似乎不能引起大众的太多关注，这次正式发布的为桌面和移动设计的代号分别是 Conroe 和 Merom 的芯片算是有赢得普通大众关注的资格了。

Santa Clara 蓝色总部里的 Robert Noyce Building 后停车场上搭起了各色临时建筑，从大篷到大篷车都有，为的就是盛大的 Core 2 Duo 发布仪式。在被 AMD 呛了一年多以后，在被华尔街的小分头连续几季度唱衰后，在被自己动手发起的 reorg 带来的痛楚还没结束之前，Core 2 Duo 看上去要扮演二战时丢在广岛和长崎的胖子与小男孩的角色。

就目前情况看，Intel 的新产品对 AMD 拥有无庸置疑的性能优势－－除非有人一定要吹毛求疵，纠住些鸡毛蒜皮的地方不放。我非常期望笔记本和发烧友机器这两个方面能出现有想象力的作品，像 Alienware 这样的厂家之前的顶尖机器都是 AMD 产品，这下可以换换新芯片了，发烧友们应该又能狂欢一把。

这个前进的步伐在今年第四季度能进入新的高潮，4 核芯片预计可在彼时发布。我们看看到时有什么新的品牌名字。

Ubuntu Dapper Drake on Sony UX17

UX17 是时下最酷的 UMPC 之一 －－ 当然，SONY 的家伙可能不屑于用 UMPC 形容自己的产品……

GeekZone 这儿把最新的 Dapper Drake ，也就是 Ubuntu 6.06 装到了 UX17 上，我方对此的评论是，此举直接增加了靠在笔记本上玩弄 Linux 骗取女孩子芳心的男士再次成功的难度。

不知道无线起来没有。

Apple OS 历史

估计不大有机会读到 Amit Singh 的 Mac OS X Internals: A Systems Approach 了，不过他拿出了第一章 Origins of Mac OS X 外加详尽补充材料组成了这个 A Technical History of Apple’s Operating Systems ，书籍的第一章的内容基本只是这个 PDF 的 30%。

文章里谈到了所有 Apple 曾经接触过的 OS，或者直接间接影响了它们的系统。文档里有些第一手截图，Amit 想办法搜集了各种“古老”的文档，软件和硬件才搞定。
除了谈到 Apple 的 OS，还可以了解到不少当下 OS 的来源和些许技术构造。

这个就贵了，599 美元。Luke 自己使用过这种飞行器。出售版本是电影道具的 3/4 缩小－－不过 ThinkGeek 还真有可以坐进真人那样大小的 Rebel Snowspeeder 哈。即便这个 3/4　也限量只有 1500 个哈。

Four Legs of Imperial Doom

四腿家伙要 1249.99 美元了。All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT)，就是上面 Luke 驾驶 Snowspeeder 要攻击的帝国武器。这玩意有 230 多个部件，和 19 英寸高的电影模型一样大小，忠实复制。限量版，750个。你问 ThinkGeek 有没有这玩意儿的可坐真人版？我估计玄。。。
