男人是履行承诺的低贱动物，你承诺了父母一定要大学毕业你就确实混到大学毕业；你承诺了让老婆孩子住好房子，你就确实像狗一样混迹于社会把心血交给共党。对James Edward Allchin来说，你承诺了在Vista发布时退休，你就确实在那一天退了休，精准严密的时间衔接，符合一个工程师该有的人生轨迹。

Allchin在微软服务了17年，30号，Vista发布的那一天，他正式宣布退休。2005年9月起至今，Allchin是Platform & Services Division的co-president，此前他是Platforms Group的VP等。考虑到在一家伟大的公司deliver伟大产品一点都不足为奇――或者更应该说是理所应当――所以我们就不重复他在Microsoft做过的事情了。

Allchin是这家神童俱乐部的特征成员之一，此前他的经历包括创建Banyan Systems，VINES OS，Clouds OS，TI的DX系统。

Allchin 1951年在Michigan的一个贫穷家庭出生，父母在他幼年时迁往Florida，在一家农场干活，他和自己的哥哥Keith都在农场帮父母干活改善家计。在修补农场设备时，Allchin也培养了engineering方面的兴趣。短暂地在Florida大学学习电子工程后，他中途辍学。后来又重返学校，1973年获得CS的学士学位。

TI是他的第一份工作，内容是一个新OS。此后在Wyoming，Dallas的一些公司都流动过。1980年Allchin又从Stanford获得了CS的硕士学位。在Georgia Institute of Technology读博期间，他是Clouds分布式面向对象OS得architect。他的论文题目是An Architecture for Reliable Decentralized Systems。

1983年，Allchin加入Banyan，直到Senior VP兼CTO。这7年间，他是VINES 分布式OS的principal architect。神童俱乐部主席花了1年时间说服Allchin加入他们，1990年他终于成功，据称Bill打动Allchin的表态是，在Microsoft比在其他任何公司，都更能让你做的东西通达更多用户手中。

替代NT的Cario是Allchin的第一个大项目，后来因为国际局势风云变幻的缘故，Cario本身消失。后来Allchin担任了NT 3.5及之后的开发领导工作。1999年的Microsoft组织调整使维护家用Windows 的 Consumer Division 和维护NT的 Business & Enterprise Division 合并，Platform Group出现。Allchin成了Group VP，事实上负责那时的两个Windows版本的开发。

2005年9月20号，Microsoft再次调整组织结构，Allchin和Kevin Johnson成为新成立的Platform Products and Services Group的co-president，这个新G合并了之前的Platform G，Server and Tools G加MSN G。那时Microsoft就宣布Allchin会于2006年底退休。Kevin Johnson将成为president。

Jim打着Microsoft烙印的最后一段广被流传的话是：

I am not sure how the company lost sight of what matters to our customers (both business and home) the most, but in my view we lost our way. I think our teams lost sight of what bug-free means, what resilience means, what full scenarios mean, what security means, what performance means, how important current applications are, and really understanding what the most important problems [our] customers face are. I see lots of random features and some great vision, but that doesn’t translate into great products.

I would buy a Mac today if I was not working at Microsoft. … Apple did not lose their way. …

Allchin的承诺透着点忠诚，信义，让人有点唏嘘。
